Every opportunity I have to write for Kinfolk is a delight. This past issue was more difficult than others I’ve been a part of, but I am thinking that that makes it all the more worthwhile.

Kinfolk is progressing a bit, and is focusing on providing more structured themes for each issue. This issue’s theme: Japan.

Going into it, I knew nothing about Japan. My knowledge of Japan goes as far as my preferences of sushi rolls, and that time I watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi last year. Lucky for me,  I have a friend who knows everything about it– after being raised there for most of her life. She guided me through these Japanese ideas/ideals, and I am so grateful, because these things are worth knowing.

There is something about Japanese traditions and culture that is inspiring and humbling. Ancient culture whose roots dig so far and so long that my transient American mindset cannot comprehend. Trying to write about these ancient concepts was like taking a toothpick to chip away at a glacier. My understanding is so limited, but I am still so amazed.

All that to say, you should pick up a copy of the magazine. Not just for my piece, but for the entirety, the whole gorgeous publication. To glean and learn what you can from this fascinating culture.

(PS. Kinfolk just launched a new online presence. It’s stunning, really. Initially I was just overwhelmed to see my words in this format, but then I started diving into all the other sweet, new features and I am loving it. Check it out.)
